Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate whether or not, a relationship exists between the religious beliefs and the desire to receive home care in African American elderly. African American community shows greater involvement in their religion. The examination of cultural trends supports the idea of religious influence on the decision to utilize support facilities. Home Care or Nursing Home facilities are essential for care and support of elderly in any community. The study is important because the rising death rate of African American can have a direct association to the thesis problem.

Examining the relationship between religious beliefs and the desire to receive Home Care or acquire services from Nursing Home, in African American elderly

Description

The proposed study is about finding out whether religious beliefs of African Americans influence their decision to get Home Care. The idea is to discover how their religious beliefs impact their choice of receiving Home Care or moving to Nursing Home for supportive care in old age.

Home Care is also referred to as domiciliary care or social care. It is supportive care provided to the patients at their homes. The term itself reflects its purpose of facilitating patients in making their lives comfortable at home. Home Care Service providers and Nursing Centers have trained staff to provide necessary care to elderly. The Healthcare department of every region makes sure that support care is available for all citizens. However, people from different religious backgrounds and cultures have their own ideas towards life. They have their own understanding towards spirituality, healing or healthcare. The cultural traits may influence the decisions in various aspects of life including individual healthcare.

Objectives of the study

The prime objective of the study is to establish if there is any relationship between the African Americans beliefs and their idea towards receiving supportive care for elders. To conduct this study, it is important to analyze the influence of beliefs in the life of an African American. A close investigation of African American culture will help collect evidences to support the idea of thesis. In order to derive results for the research problem, we will begin to evaluate the subject from a broader perspective by deriving results for sub-objectives. We will be using the facts, derived from sub-objectives, to check against our main objective of proposed study.
