Review of the Movie “Flight”

Introduction

In the movie 'Flight', Denzel Washington has played the role of the Captain Pilot of South Air Jet, a traveler airline, as Whip Whitaker. No doubt, that Denzel Washington's performance in the film is a triumph. The film comes to be a riveting, gripping, deeply engaging, emotionally intense nail-biting thriller. With this film, Washington has attained the best part of his career.

In the movie, Whip is a divorced man living alone, despite his ex-wife and a son. In his personal life, he is an alcoholic with extensive use of cocaine; this might be the reason of his divorce. Anyhow, he is indulged in an affair with the flight attendant Katerina Marquez (Trina) (www.imdb.com).

The story is about the plane crash incident because of the Whip. The night before the flight 227 to Atlanta; he spends it with Trina in Orlando with heavy drinking and cocaine use. The very next morning, while he is still drunk; he assumes the flight from Orlando to Atlanta despite the stormy weather forecast. It is easy to understand that he was feeling instability and turbulence while taking off. Moreover, due to the severe weather conditions, the plane showed mechanical problems during the flight. It was Whip's skills and the final choice that he crashes the plane in an empty field saving 96 lives on-board with 6 deaths. The dead ones include 4 passengers and two crew members; Trina was also among them. He gets faint and is then hospitalized because of this all, where his blood test report shows that he was intoxicated in the flight. This was the time when his great secret reveals upon the world that he has been an addict in his life. His lawyer and friends suggests him to remain sober for few days as to get free from the criminal charges, but he refuses and hence gets prisoned. It is sad and heart-breaking that he is again left alone after the death of Trina. However, then he struggles to control his addiction; which is not as easy as it seems which leads to getting his relations well with his ex-wife and his son (www.imdb.com).

Discussion: Reviewing the Movie “Flight”

Denzel Washington in this film has brilliantly portrayed a last stage addict of cocaine. Even, he cannot wake up without in taking the cocaine. However, this time he cannot be admired only, but is watched with agony and misery. Besides his performance and the films' success, there are many sociological concerns related to the story and portions of the film.
