Introduction

A Radio frequency ID (RFID) also called “Frequency Identification” is a microchip. This microchip acts as a tiny tag or transponder. When it exposed to radio waves of a certain frequency, it transmits a signal. This signal is either a radio signal beamed back to the transmitter, or an audible sound or beep.

RFID increases productivity and convenience in various fields. In thousands of applications such as to prevent automobiles and goods from theft, targeting specific, collecting tickets on tolls without stopping the vehicles, automating parking systems, controlling access of vehicles to restricted areas, we prefer RFID. Retailers use this valuable technology in clothing and place scanners at exits. When a customer tries to steal merchandise, the RFID beeps and alert the security staff.

According to Bartholomew Elias, RFID is very useful in the aviation industry and ensures the tracking and reliable transfer of expensive products (Elias, B., 2009, p 23).

RFID in Current Aviation Sector

As in other areas of application, RFID technology is also very effective when this technology is applied in an Aviation industry. The main reason behind usage of RFID in this industry is to ensure safety and security of passengers and its baggage with the least chances of mistake. Another important and notable usage of RFID in current industry is to target the enemy through fighter planes.

Today it is excessively used in the aviation industry and helps the aviation companies in improving its arrangements processes. It reduces cost of trip by identifying rouge things, which helps in minimizing airline inventories. The use of RFID technology also removes limitations of line of sight for checking baggage tags. It saves valuable time of passengers and airport staff by automatic managing the baggage.

According to McFarlane, the director of Aerospace ID Technologies Programme, aviation industry should have to focus on using cheap, high class and better quality tags. This effects almost every aspect of industry (Duncan, 2005).

According to Andrew, RFID Manager at Airline trade association, in upcoming years, the use of RFID in the aviation industry (to tag the baggage of passengers) increased very effectively and reaches at a very high level and will also use in other advanced applications (Price, 2007).

Applications of RFID in current Aviation Sector

For performing, controlling and managing multiple tasks efficiently RFID is excessively used in the aviation industry. The major applications of this technology inside aviation industry are described below:

Used for Tagging

The most common application of RFID in the aviation industry is to manage the baggage system of passengers by tagging them. This tiny module tags are placed on the bags of each passenger. This bag is then put on the conveyer belt and passes from checking processes without any problem.

According to tests of RFID performed at various U.S airports, RFID tags were far more accurate than bar codes when it is applied to baggage handling systems (Chang, Y. S., et.al, 2007, p224-229).
