Robert Lewis Contribution to Teaching

Robert Lewis has been one of the renowned persons when it comes to Contribution to teaching and education. He used different ways to teach his students and he gave a new insight to education. Second-graders at Hastings School were treated to the story-telling prowess of 83-year-old Westboro resident Robert Lewis yesterday.

Lewis read to the pupils as part of the 11th annual Community Reading Day, sponsored by the Alliance for Education and BankBoston.

Area schools took time out yesterday to welcome "celebrity readers," each of whom spent about an hour in a classroom reading to the children.

According to the Alliance for Education, more than 5,000 people across the state took time to read to 90,000 schoolchildren.

Pupils responded well to the story Lewis read, "The Amazing Bone" by William Steig. But they seemed to respond even better to Lewis' interjections and anecdotes.

At one point in the story, Pearl the Pig visits the bakery to pick up some bread. Lewis couldn't help himself, and began telling the children about what bakeries were like when he was young. "I used to ride my bike a mile to get a loaf of bread, and it cost 10 cents," he told his attentive audience. "There weren't as many books, magazines, or television sets when I was young," Lewis said. He used to play outside with his friends, he said (Surhone, Timpledon & Marseken, 2010).

Lewis was born and raised in Sharon, a steel town in western Pennsylvania. After World War II, he moved to Cleveland. From there he went to Los Angeles and then to Athens, Ga.

In 1989, Lewis came to Westboro to be closer to his three sons and nieces. Another factor that drew him to Westboro was The Willows, a residence for assisted living.
