Role of the Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia in Fighting Terrorism

Introduction

The war against terror has been going on in the world since past few decades, and efforts on the part of terrorists, as well as the fighting forces, are increasing with each passing day. Although the terrorist activities were going on since a number of years, the incident of 9/ 11 proved to be the last nail in the coffin and marked the final stage, after which the war against terror gained pace and started off properly, with a clear vision and a new dimension.

In the beginning, a number of countries were against the war and decided not to participate, but now, after almost eleven years of the continuous struggle, although terrorism has not been completely eradicated, but the number of countries participating in the effort has increased. Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that were initially not participating in the quest of peace, but with the passage of time Saudi Arabians stance changed, and now it is going hands in hands with United States of America to eradicate terrorism. The country is not only cooperating with USA on its own soil but is also taking part in infiltration of terrorists from neighboring countries, and other areas of the world. The cooperation has been of great help for the United States of America because the Saudi soil is getting used for terrorism since a number of years, and without the government's cooperation, the quest would have been difficult. Initial strained relations of Saudi Arabia and United States of America

As mentioned earlier, in the beginning of war against terror, the relations between the two countries, Saudi Arabia and United States of America, remained strained for a couple of years and there was no cooperation what so ever. The major reason behind the situation was the development of mistrust, which emerged with the presence of Saudi hijackers in the airplanes (which attacked the World Trade Centre), got confirmed. The relationship started getting better two years ago, when the formal and announced collaboration finally started between the two countries. Certain ups and downs have been observed in the relation within these two years as well, but the overall collaboration is going perfectly good.

Terrorism

Terrorism cannot be defined in definite terms, due to a number of reasons, including the political and semantic issues. However, the phenomenon can be roughly defined on the base of objectives of the terrorist groups and the means employed to achieve those goals. The aims might include ideological, political, economic and religious objectives, and a number of means can be used to achieve the aims, including hijacking, assassinating, bombing and kidnapping. Other reprehensible acts can also be employed by the terrorist groups, in order to disturb law and order situation and create domestic upheaval.
