Introduction

The American Family association, which is a right wing advocacy group, has come up with a total of ten arguments against the concept of same sex marriages. But all of these ten arguments are based on totally shaky grounds that don't really have a concrete case. Firstly, the banning of same sex marriages does not really help in protecting heterosexual marriages. Secondly, it opposes the basic principles of the American Democracy. Thirdly, if same sex marriages are legalized, heterosexual marriages will not be harmed in any way and legalizing would actually acknowledge the legitimacy of the same sex relationships.

Discussion

Banning same sex marriages does not really close Pandora's Box. People who are against same sex marriages are of the view that if these same sex marriages are legalised, then it will give rise to polygamy, incest and bestiality. What they do not mention is that the Federal Marriage Amendment does not really ban incest and the laws regarding divorce and marriage cannot be adapted to embrace polygamous unions. In cases of bestiality, one party which is involved, does not come under the category of humans, therefore it is not really covered under the Bill of Rights. Even if the courts decide to cover cats, dogs and squirrels under the Bill of Rights, cross marriages will not be one of our main worries. Polygamous, incestuous and half bestial marriages cannot be banned by passing a constitutional amendment that bans same sex marriages. This can be done so by passing a constitutional amendment and banning these polygamous, incestuous and half bestial marriages. Unlike the FMA, such a constitutional amendment would actually get enough votes to pass.
