Introduction

We face challenges on daily basis in both our professional and personal lives, some people simply try to cope but those who make the best of it and to do their best are the ones who are successful professionally and personally. Effective self management skills are necessary for those professional who want to do their best, lead others and themselves by setting meaningful goals. Self management from organization perspective means getting rid of autocratic or top bottom hierarchy and indulging in participative management techniques giving rise to employee empowerment, employee engagement and more autonomy so that employees are able to manage their time and skill to optimum (IBM, 2004, pp. 1). Self management techniques give us employees enough freedom to take business decision that they think are best. Individuals are supposed to be the best judges of their performance and competency and are given the chance to select for their training and mentoring programs in order to remain competitive and successful. The latest self management organization model focus on flatter organization structure with self directed work teams and distributed decision making (Kirkpatrick, 2010, pp. 1).

Discussion

The process of self management starts off with self analysis. Since I am suffering from dyslexia it's a little difficult for me to understand multiple instructions and jargons. Additionally I have also realized that when asked to work in the form of a team, I am hesitant to take part in administrative or other related paper work such as data collection and report making tasks. The current team that I was working with was happy with my decision to present the report verbally and not take part in any of the other report making and data gathering part but this also shows the areas that I lag behind in especially with regards to self management skills. If we consider the National Occupation List it lists “manage your own resources” as an important area and requirement. Managing resources includes tasks such as self assessment so that the person is able to reflect on his personality and figure out the strengths and weaknesses for improvement. I have identified my weaknesses as mentioned above and need to improve on them by setting up some realistic goals like pushing myself to move forward and take part in administrative work.
