Abstract

The paper begins with defining what terrorism is. For long people in US felt that they were relatively secure, then came the occurrence of September 11, 2001. It was a loophole in the security which led to this event. An account of how Al Qaeda came into existence and the man behind it all Osama Bin Laden was able to fulfill his mission. The loss inflicted by terrorist throughout the world has been discussed with the terror attack on World trade Center given thorough importance. The losses inflicted as a result have been discussed in depth. The response as a result of US led war on terror has been talked about. Repercussion for the US as a result of this terror attack has been highlighted. September 11, 2001 changes the complexion of the world entirely.

Introduction

The events of September 11, 2001 changed the course of history throughout the World. It is marked as a black day in history for the people in United States of America. The level of destruction & loss of valuable life's that took place on that day is simply irreparable. Those subjected to such brutal event, can even now vividly recall what happened on that day.

For long people in US, hold conviction that they were extremely secure in their territory. The barrier that existed between the US & middle east in the form of an ocean for long has been thought of as fairly secure. Then there came the September 11, 2001 attacks on US by its enemy which has changed this perception.

The occurrence of such event showed the loophole in the security. Consequently, stringent security measures were adopted which had adversely impacted people's freedom to a great extent. The root cause of this event could be linked to the clash between the US foreign policy and the traditional cultures holding firm believes in Islamic values. At the center of it was Al Qaeda which had deep rooted hatred for the US. On a macro level US influence on other countries have declined greatly, with the rise of Asian Economies. The rise in Islamic values with unfavorable US foreign policy amongst Muslim States triggered such brutal terrorist attacks in US (Huntington, 1996).

For a country enriched with deep rooted democratic values, balancing stringent freedom rights with appropriate security measures posed a serious challenge for the authorities. There are more than 17000 law enforcement agencies in US operating at various levels.
