Before proceeding towards the main topic “serial killers in modern American society”, let us first have a look on what the term serial killer means. A killer is one who kills. Killing can also be referred as murder. Serial killing or serial murder is the murder of more than two people throughout the duration of above one month with a cooling-off duration in between all the crimes (Holmes 2009 p.5).
The American society is one of those modern societies that are a victim of this epidemic to a considerable extent. The FBI study has shown that the greatest number of serial killers belongs to the American society. FBI has indicated that 85% of the world's serial killers are Americans. Every modern society consist of such criminals who keep killing people for many reasons, but the modern American society is the most affected one and the situation has become alarming at the moment.

The American Society
The American society today is one of the world's most modern societies. The industrial revolution led to the technological revolution which in turn made the human beings more robotic rather than humans with feelings rendering them emotionless. The consequences tend to be dire. Crimes are increasing day by day. This is because they are getting more and more frustrated. The machine culture that has emerged due to the technological transformation in every walk of life is actually the cause of their frustration.
One of the many consequences of this machine culture is the serial killings. Serial killing may be traced to the advent of the machine culture. The term “serial killing” was first coined by Robert Ressler, an FBI agent, in 1970. This term denotes murder incidents in series. This was the era when the technological revolution has started. So the relation between the serial killing and the machine culture is easy to perceive (Seltzer 1998, p. 64).
Referring to the American Psycho (1991), Seltzer (1998) argues that the there is a relation between serial murders and the consumerism. Most of the serial killings in the American society involve the element of sex. The idea and practice of fetishism rapidly grew in the American society. People believe that serial killers suffer from a personality disorder known as 'Antisocial personality disorder'. They seem to be normal and even charismatic but are antisocial. So it is obvious that, in many cases, the serial killers take with them the victim's belongings or other items such as their weapon that they would later utilize to remember the crime they committed.
