NCAA athletics are the most popular and important college sports that are followed with great interest by many people and has a large viewership. National College Athletics Association was established in 1906. The main reason behind its formation was to protect the rights of the players and save them from any type of manipulation or exploitation at the hand of authorities and other student associations. When athletics were in the initial stages of popularity, many player lost their lives due to politics and malpractices of the people involved. At that time President Theodere Roosevelt came up with the idea of forming certain rule and regulation under a governing body by the name of National College Athletic Association and the leading players and students were called to attend the conference regarding formation of rules at the White House. As a result around 62 colleges became member of NCAA (National College Athletic Association, 2009).
Discussion
The latest debate that has been disturbing may people related to NCAA is that whether the players who earn so much money for their colleges by putting so much effort and hard work should be paid or not. First of all people need to clear their understanding regarding the amount earned by the athletics. To present a more clear picture of the whole scenario it will be worth mentioning over here that the only 12 out of 120 colleges were able to make minimal profit. The rest of the colleges not earn but actually lose their money in the form of huge funding that is used to sponsor the programs at such a large scale. Now the question arises that where are funds coming from and the answer is very simple. The colleges and universtites take out these finances by cutting down on their funds for scholarships, tools and classroom resources and salaries of teachers etc. how would the colleges manage if they start paying salaries to the players. The students by taking part in these sports represent their colleges and play with a motivation and personal belief that they would win and their college will be popular and known by everyone. Additionally, it is not like they are not given any type of benefits for working so hard besides studying. They are exempted to pay the tution fee and are compensated by providing with perks in the form of payment for their meal plans, rooms and board etc. what will happen, if colleges actually start paying their players any type of salary. The overall situation of sports will suffer. Colleges will be forced to cut down on majority of the sports activities, many student will not get a chance to take part in health activities or other forms of college sports as a large amount of funds would go in paying the salaries of NCAA players (Bokshan, 2011).
