Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18?

Introduction

The legally acceptable age of consuming alcohol in US is one of the huge debates among various circles of people. There are a lot of people who are proposing the age 18 to be enforced as a legal age for consuming alcohol rather than setting the age of 21. The vast majority of young people, whether in college or not, consume alcohol long before they turn 21. It argued which supports a law that makes abstinence and enforcement the only tools a parent or a university may employ on young violators, whose numbers are vast and whose ingenuity in avoiding detection is increasingly acute. Experience, on the other hand, suggests that just say no and people will enforce the law without exception are not the most effective ways to enable young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol. Alcohol-related fatalities achieved its ten year high level in 2006. The ratio of fatalities in Puerto Rico decreased by 11% last year, although the lowest age was 21 years in this state. There are some of peer reviewed studies conducted on the effect of drinking age on fatalities which displayed a positive correlation. Though, there were other studies that did not show a correlation at all. The drinking age has effectively vanished alcohol from public places. However, there were not many efforts taken to reduce drinking in most of the states. There was a requirement for people to create an ideal venue for binge drinking, but it was on the condition that they are not going to create student union, a dining hall, a restaurant or any public gathering place. They would prepare a private room, an off-campus residence and a farmer's field which will make it easier for them to drink alcohol.

The fact, identified, that binge drinking took place in those environments, which possessed lots of risk. Surprisingly, a college will achieve a level of success when they are going to enforce a law banning underage drinkers and people having legal age to consume alcohol. The limitations of quantities, enforcing campus security, likelihood will be higher, when alcohol consumption is going to move out of campus sight, and, often beyond campus limitations. The college authorities are going to eradicate this negative behavior out of the campus. The result has interpreted that more than one thousand lives of 18-24 year old are lost each year because of the increase in the consumption of alcohol in highways, and, this rate is rising considerably. The supporters of the law continue to urge abstinence and enforcement. Such an approach makes no allowance for human judgment or discretion, for a consideration of the distinctive circumstances that encircle every incident that eventually becomes another impersonal piece of data (Bartlett, 239).
