Several types of artifact are commonly present in polysomnographic data, including line noise, movement and electrode artifacts (extreme artifact), slow rolling eye movement, eye blinks, EMG, and EKG. Such artifacts may complicate computerized analysis. For example, power spectral analyses may be corrupted by high voltage artifacts in the frequency range of interest. Similarly, automated computer scoring systems may misinterpret artifact as normal sleep phenomena, resulting in incorrect classification.
