Abstract

The term smoking refers to a practice in which smoke is inhaled by burning a substance most commonly tobacco. It is a hard habit Smoking is a hard habit to break as nicotine is involved in tobacco which is highly addictive. The mind and the body quickly become so used to the nicotine present in the cigarettes that a person desires to have it for feeling normal. This research paper will focus on different aspects of smoking including its reason of addiction and its side-effects. In order to have a better and more relevant understanding of the study, a qualitative approach will based to review a decent amount of literature that will build a strong foundation for the research. Moreover, a survey will be conducted using questionnaires incorporating open ended questions to elicit the responses of people about smoking. The outcomes of this research will be very beneficial in increasing the awareness about the critical impacts of smoking.

Purpose Statement & Rationale

The purpose of this research is to analyze the rate of people in United States, who are addicted to smoking o make them aware with its side -effects and strategies to prevent them from smoking. The aim of any research is to contribute to the pool of knowledge that exists in the world. It is important to keep in mind that the intention of research is to expand the boundary of our knowledge by making a systematic and scientific investigation into the unknown. Following are the three topics that will be covered in this research:

Literature Review

There are variety of reasons that make them people start smoking. Youngsters assume that smoking makes the look cool. Some start because they are motivated by their friends and other colleagues while some people start smoking as they want to lessen their frustration and stress. It is estimated that 9 out of ten users of smoking start it before they were 18 (Thun, Hannan, Campbell,. et al. 2008). It shows that the youngsters are more involved in these activities and once they started, they are never able to quit it (Gades, Nehra, Jacobson, et al. 2005). It becomes an addiction and quitting it brings depression that is why addicted people necessarily need it to feel normal. It is a fact that not starting smoking is much easier as compare to starting it and then trying to quit (Lakatos, Szamosi, and Lakatos, 2007).

Smoking is considered as one of the leading causes of death not only in United States but all around the world. 500,000 deaths per year in Unite States are recorded due to smoking-related diseases and there are many countries in which it is estimated that male population is significantly affected with shortened life-spans due to smoking (Willigendael, Teijink, Bartelink, et al.2005).
