That is to say that for our parents and others belonging to their generation, tattoos upheld a fundamentally homologous association with deviant behaviour. To be precise, having a tattoo was a rather revealing sign that the person was expected to have engaged in different types of deviant activities for the reason that according to Doss & Ebesu (2009), tattoo becomes a significant part of an individual's physical appearance or personality and people more often than not judge others by their physical appearance (Doss & Ebesu, 2009). Thus, people with tattoos are usually categorized as the ones who break the norms and therefore fall under the category of negative deviants. These are the people who stand below the standard criteria of acceptability and who own the opposite side of the spectrum from heroes and saints (Irwin, 2003).

The history of tattoos bears out that the definitions of deviancy are constantly changing. However, during the 20th century, academics and researchers accepted tattooing as a semiotic depiction of deviancy and pathology (Kosut, 2006). Lately, tattooing was authorized as a significant way to make some modifications in the body.
