Sociology - Tradition

Introduction

The story “Everyday” use is about a protagonist's confidence which helped his family defense. Walker has beautifully portrayed a positive image to cool down the wrath of Blacks. It was the time when African American consciousness was rising and tension was increasing. If we look into the traditional changing we see that the tradition in which blacks were slaved by white people and the blacks were not given opportunities to grow. The characters show a cultural attachment and so their names. The clothes, way of conversation and the food they eat all shows there affiliation with their heritage. This heritage was once a tradition which with the passage of time has converted into a culture. Dee is the character which seems to be follower of tradition and creating ambiguity between her heritage and traditions. She is a determined lady who is influence by the tradition of that time and opposes things that seems to be opposing her Africa culture (Walker and Barbara, 1994, n.d.).

Discussion

In this story there are three main characters and a secondary character. All characters are somehow depicting their culture and tradition. Three primary characters are Mama, Maggie and Dee. Mama as by the name shows that she is a mother. Mama is a traditional name used to call mothers especially in America and Africa. Maggie and Dee are her daughters. As the story moves on we can see that Dee renamed herself to show that she is more attached to her tradition and her new name can depict it better than her previous name. It is a story which shows different characters following their relevant tradition. Dee dress herself as an Africa (that is what she thinks and Mama do not think so). She wears dress which is inappropriate to the tradition and weather conditions. She is an educated lady who styles her hairs in African style.

Another character which can be viewed in following his tradition is Hakim-a-Barber. When Hakim, Dee, Maggie and Mama were eating he stated that he cannot eat pork or green as he was a Muslim and these things were not permitted in his religion.

Dee seems to be a lady who challenges the people who negates or oppose her heritage. Despite of the fact that Dee does not know much about her heritage & culture she tries to follow what the tradition of that time was portraying. Africans were going through harsh reactions at that time by the Americans but instead Dee seems to be focusing on American dictated traditions as her own tradition In view of tradition setting we can see that these patterns are developed over the period of time. Dee looks at her surroundings and she believes herself to be above them. The behavior of Dee predicts that in future she can stand against her own culture and heritage as she was going to marry or was married with a Muslim.

Mama is also following the tradition of that time as people often got ...
