Introduction

The Secession Convention was called by the legislature to meet on December 17, and on December 20 the Secession Ordinance was adopted. The movement toward secession met with general approval throughout the state, although a group of unionists around Greenville had uncompromising objections. The first selection is the ordinance; the second is a comment on the members and actions of the convention; and the last is a description of the reception of the Secession Ordinance by the people of Charleston (Carlisle, 2008).
