Special Education Strategies for Co-Teaching and the Self-Contained Environment

I. Introduction

The study relates to strategies of special education for co-teaching and the self-contained environment. It is known that students with special needs of education have the right to get appropriate and free education, which is governed by the law. In this view, it is important and imperative that students should be educated in their least restrict environment. Moreover, the best placement for all the students which include to students who get general education and students with special education needs should meet their unique needs of learning, which is possible through providing education in self-contained environment and through co-teaching. These strategies of special education that are co-teaching and the self-contained environment will enable students with special education needs in gaining more confidence and have the feeling of equality with students who get general education. It is noted that the self-contained environment and co-teaching can be very useful for the students with special education needs, in particular those students with milder disabilities, for instance, learning disabilities. When implemented correctly, the strategies that co-teaching and the self-contained environment can be a successful way in teaching students in a classroom setting.

II. Historical Summary

Past studies show that in special education strategies, learning strategy in cooperating groups was considered as important for the self-contained environment and co-teaching. It has been known for a long time, but popularized in the 1980's and in twentieth century that learning strategy was very effective strategy which consists in dividing the class into small groups of 6 to 8 persons and overseeing the work of students in such a way that students with special education needs worked “as a group”. The rule is that every student has a job and competence without which it is impossible to realize what the group has achieved (Bott, 2009). Groups can be made up of students of similar or different levels of efficiency, the fact that the idea of integration is implemented fully in the case of groups with different levels. The role of the teacher for co-teaching and the self-contained environment entail the following:

Selection of appropriate tasks for the group so that every student, especially a special needs could contribute;

Learning skills is an important in the communication process (listening, making eye contact, asking questions, understand the point of view of a friend, respect for diversity and individual differences);

To deal with potential problems such as aggression or passive in a way that will model the behavior of students with special education needs.
