Fear of Crime and Crime

Introduction

Fear is a natural, often beneficial emotion under many circumstances. Crimi Fear is a response that allows individuals to avoid danger, and many individuals, who are fearful of criminal victimization, and the danger associated with it, may limit their activities or take other actions designed to avoid this danger, and thus reduce their fear. Individuals who are fearful of crime may not travel at night, may avoid certain areas that they consider dangerous, and may engage in myriad avoidance behaviours and adaptive strategies.

Under the wrong circumstances, however, fear can restrict individual freedom, constrain behaviours, and negatively influence the quality of life of a fearful individual. Fear of crime differs from most hazards of life because it is often based on limited or inaccurate information about crime risk and crime realities. Because crime victimization has the potential to be catastrophic, many individuals often err on the side of caution, fearing crime far more than is necessary. As such, it is imperative that reliable information about crime and the potential for criminal victimization, as well as the personal and social characteristics that reduce the risk of criminal victimization, be provided to individuals, particularly those most fearful of crime. Reducing the gap between factual information on the potential for crime and the often distorted information available from media and anecdotal sources will go a long way toward reducing fear of crime and upgrading the quality of life for many fearful individuals.

Methodology

In the United Kingdom particularly, many people argue that fear of crime may be a greater problem than crime itself. From this inception, a national survey conducted, the survey has asked respondents that “How much of the quality of life is affected by the fear of crime”? Even though there is some controversy over whether this question is a valid measure to analyse quality of life, it is apparent that whatever the question is measuring, a substantial minority experience this phenomenon, and their number appears to remain relatively stable regardless of what is happening with the actual crime rate. The survey consists of a questionnaire with eight questions in all, there are two dependent variables as “fearofCrime” and “crime” has been chosen to focus the study. The study finds out the relationship between the dependent and independent variables, and finds out that whether fear of crime is more affecting the quality of life or crime. First four variables covers the demographic part of an individual, which I think is one of the most important parts of the survey as it would show the relation of fear of crime with individual's ...
