Abstract

This research paper entails the detailed research on stereotyping and racism. Stereotyping and racial discrimination has been a profound concern of the society, which has played its role in creating differences amongst the people dwelling in same nation. This paper explains the consequence of stereotyping, role played by media in stereotyping, how it has influenced children. This paper also contains the detail on racism, reason of it, along with areas where it's found commonly, including, employment, education and health care services.

Stereotyping and Racism

Introduction

Stereotyping, a belief, espouses for explicit types of people or precise way of doing things; however, it is possible of the belief of reflecting or not reflecting the true reality. This is only a basic psychological definition of stereotype. There are different concepts and theories pertaining to stereotyping, which is within or across the discipline of psychology, which may provide different and comprehensive definition of stereotype. There does exist similarities amongst the shared definitions; however, each definition may highlight multiple aspects, which may oppose or accompaniment each other (Judd & Park, 1993).

Racism, also known as racialism, is defined as practices, actions, or beliefs that imitate the view of world related to race. Race is defined in terms of an ideology that humans are distinctive on basis of biological entities. This ideology highlights that every human belonging to a specific race share a set of beliefs, culture, personality traits, qualities, morality, abilities, and behavioral characteristics that are inherited due to the inheritance, each raced is categorized being inferior or superior to other race.

Stereotyping

The attitudes of people link with formation of stereotype are demonstrated in Survey of Social Science Sociology. Attitudes play and imperative role in understanding the differences in people, which sometimes can result in recognition of stereotypes. Stereotype can also be defined as a consistent picture of metal held by members belonging to a group, which symbolizes a critical, oversimplified, or detrimental verdict regarding members belonging to other group; stereotype is usually used for legitimization of discrimination.

Stereotyping Consequences

Stereotyping plays an influential role of affecting behavior and perception. For example, a study was conducted, where the students were connected to the exposure of pictures and words associated with old age, as a result students after the exposure stared to walk more slowly and were slow in performing their task. However, students connected with “soccer hooligan”, were able to answer lesser general knowledge question, in comparison to the students who were associated with the professor were able to answer more question, and their performances improved (Collins & Skover, 1993). The reason for the result of such associations are not yet cleared; however, it is known that behaviors are activated that are stereotypic; behavior relevant and related to the stereotypic nature also gets activated.
