Summary and Response Essay

Introduction

The essay is written by Andrew Sullivan by the title of ““Society is Dead: We have retreated into the iWorld.” In this essay, the author presents his feeling and thinking about the use of electronic gadgets in New York. The writer started the essay by stating that the night life in New York is very much dull and boring, nothing exciting about the night. However, the day life is full of yells, hustle and chatter that transformed New York into the one of the most happening cities of the world. The current New York is filled with huge malls, riverside parks and what not. Today's New York is the best among the other metropolitans. Discussion

The main body of the essay is all about the usage of electronic gadgets. When the writer arrived in New York, he was quite astonished to witness that little wires hanging from the ears of every individual walking through the road or travelling through the sub way. These little wires mostly tucked into pockets of the pants or jackets. Every individual moving on the road was enjoying his/her own musical world and it seems that music is now the integral part of their life.Besides pointing out the other peoples' obsession for music, the author also refutes his own passion for music. According to the author “What was once an occasional musical diversion became a compulsive obsession. Perhaps the musical ability of the cell affect the number of iPod sales, but the opinion of this author is not so much to present a danger to Apple. The author tired to convince the readers by an argument that this iWorld has captured the whole world. To remain active in this world or to be noticed among the masses, one must have to be part of this cult. It is necessary for every human being to remain up-to-date with latest inventions. Therefore, to be a member of this cult is the demand of the time (Padula, 2009, pp. 611).

Furthermore, the author presented an argument that the life of the people of New York is now revolves around the technology. The impact of technology converted the people into isolation. This argument supported by the statement of the author in which he stated that “Don't ask, do not tell, do not overhear, do not observe. Just tune in and tune out”. Similarly, the role of satellite channels cannot be ignored. The electronic media and technology transformed the lives of the people because people can now ...
