Introduction

This paper will discuss the argument on one of the famous politics of Thailand. He is known as one of the strongmen in the politics of Thailand. His political career has been the most controversial political careers of the country. We have taken the political career of Banharn Silpa-archa to be focused here. Banharn Silpa-archa is a Thai politician who was the Prime Minister of Thailand, between July 13 of 1995 and November 24 of 1996. Electoral results always obtained over 60 percent of votes in the province, and since 1994, he has been the leader of the opposition party, Chart Thai, which is one of the oldest political parties in the country. He was the Prime Minister from 1995 to 1996 and was succeeded by Chavalit Yongchaiyudh. He has been accused many times of being a corrupt man but has never been tried or convicted of any crime. Many of the people in politics hate Banharn for his bureaucratic leadership style, the people of the Suphanburi like him. A number of people in the history of Thailand has degraded the leadership style of Banharn due to his involvement in a number of scandals which also cost him his position in the politics. However, his leadership style has been helpful in the success of various development projects in the province of Suphanburi where he works as a supervisor. The paper will argue in favor of his leadership style that his authoritarian and democratic leadership style has been helpful in the development of the area and therefore, people of the province like him.

The political leader Banharn Silpa-archa from Suphanburi, Thailand has had one of the most debatable political careers in the country of Thailand. However, the paper argues that the nickname of Banharn, “A walking ATM”, does not completely reflect his status in politics and reasons for his overwhelming support at the province level. It cannot be denied that his political career has been characterized by offering material inducements through clientlism, pork barrel politics, vote buying, biased programmatic policies and so forth. Consequently, family members, local business friends, followers or loyalists, who have intimate ties with Banharn have been blessed with handsome road construction contracts, privileged and powerful seats, successful development projects at the provincial and national level. While acknowledging the financial support and political connections Banharn has created or used, this paper will also demonstrate there are other reasons for his political support. His leadership style, building of identity and pride are some of the non-material aspects of his tenure in politics.
