Introduction

Waste is a mandatory by-product of human life. Every human generates some kind of waste. When something becomes retarded, then it becomes a waste. Any waste that is dangerous to environmental health because of toxicity, ignitability, corrosiveness, chemical reactivity or other reason is called as hazardous waste (Squires.O.C, 2006). The waste generation percentage has also increased, due to rapid growth of the industries. There are a number of sources from where waste generates. There are different types of wastes. Solid waste can pose a threat to the environmental health if they are not disposed properly. It also pollutes the fresh water resources (www.who.or.id)

Methodology

This essay covers the basic concept of solid waste management and the risk associated with it. The data collected by secondary sources. Five published journals considered in this study. This study checks various methods, finds an appropriate method for the waste management and, reduces the basic risk associated with it. It will find an appropriate method for proper disposal of waste, recycling of the waste and site selection for landfills. The aim is to provide a clean environment and to provide people with healthy, disease free environment by establishing an appropriate waste management system.

The risk associated with the waste are as follows.

Disease transmission

The flies, animals, and vermin get attracted towards the natural decomposing wastes. Particularly domestic waste contains nappies of children that contaminate with the solid waste and becomes breeding sites for flies. The rodents transmit the diseases like salmonella and leptospirosis. Sometime water remains in the discarded tins and drums becomes a place for mosquitoes for laying eggs. This is also responsible for the spread of yellow fever and dengue.

Pollution

When the collection and disposal are not properly done then there can be leachate, which can pollute the ground water. When waterless waste is deposited in humid climates then there creates a threat of fire hazard, which can cause harm to people and the nearby buildings.

Effect on morale

When people live in dirty, chaotic environment then they become less motivated towards maintaining a healthy environment around them. Waste generates more waste, and this leads to unhygienic atmosphere in general.

In order to establish the effective waste management then the following steps should be followed.

High income countries produce more waste as compare to low income countries. Waste is generated by food stores, feeding centre, slaughter areas, markets, food distribution points.
