ABSTRACT

This writer approached this project with a strong interest in learning about teachers, the job stress in which they experience, and why it leads to burnout. There are several books and journal articles which discuss teacher burnout and the different ways to measure it. One article mentioned that they used The Teacher Burnout Scale to measure burnout among teachers. This scale will also be used in the research done by this writer. The subjects include one hundred high school teachers. These teachers were all given a questionnaire created by this writer. From this research, this writer wanted to find out how stressed out teachers are and why so many of them are burning out.

Empirical research indicates that more and more teachers are in the beginning stages of burnout. Burnout has been happening in the teaching profession since the seventies. There are several books which we were written in regard to teachers and burnout; some were written in the seventies and others are more current. This study evaluates the data gathered through field research based on the Teacher Burnout Scale and the questionnaires completed by the teachers. The hypothesis under investigation predicts that teachers do experience high levels of job stress, which, eventually leads to burnout. This writer will also provide teachers with several different techniques which they can use in order to deal with the stressors from their job.
