Introduction

2011 was a year of active growth of social protest in various parts of the world. Revolution in Egypt and Tunisia, the unrest in Yemen and Bahrain, the civil war in Libya, protests in the U.S. and Spain are different in nature and reason. However, they are united by the active use of the demonstrators of the Internet and social media. And if the latter had treated more as a pastime, it is now clear that social media is a powerful mobilization tool that allows you to combine and unite like-minded people (Weinburg, pp. 13-25).

Asthis research paper has focused on the role of technology in social protests, therefore, firstly a statement has beehn identified for research work and than the ways through which data has been gathered were identified. Furthermore, this plan was drawn in order to highlight the ways through which research will be done. Firstly, influence of social media will be identified than the steps of media will be discussed. In the end of the discussion, the role of smart mob will be analyzed in deifining protest through social networking sites.

Influential Social Media

The use of means of social media to express protests and invite public to claim their rights and overthrow governments dates back to the year 2001, which addressed the issue of disqualification of Philippine President Joseph Estrada. The president's loyalists in the Philippine Congress ignored the evidence against him, and in less than two hours, seven million text messages were sent telling President Joseph Estrada to leave. Few days later, the social protest successfully removed Estrada from power (Kuzmeski, pp.110-119).

The organization of protests by social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and other social networking sites have become a new way of protest by the participants in order to bring about social change through the activities of low-cost protest, where working user and social media to can be used as a means to coordinate the act (Dunlap, pp.20-22). As a result, the participants have a decreased risk of physical violence against them in the protest. In fact, it remains a way to use those tools to coordinate and document the action in the world (Kuzmeski, pp.110-119). Therefore, it is very likely to be part of the work of political movements in the future.
