The Attacks of September 11th, 2001

Introduction

The bloodiest day in American happened on a sunny morning on September, 11th, 2001. Most Americans were either in their workplaces or were on their way. The children were at school and apparently, it was just another day in the lives of Americans. However, all that was to change very suddenly when the United States came under direct attack. The time was around 8:46 AM and people who were tuned to CNN, actually saw the second plane ram into the other tower of the World Trade Center. The world as we know it changed forever. The loss of life and the financial cost was overwhelming. It was a test of patience as well as resilience of the American public to bounce back.

After eleven years, we all still wonder as to why such gruesome acts of terror took place. What might have been the motivations of the perpetrators of the attacks and why did they choose a totally civilian target. A total of four planes were used in the attack and only one of them was used against a military target, which was the Pentagon. There are some sources that state that at that time, the Vice President was involved in War Games that enacted hijacking related scenarios. The events spelled tragedy for the entire nation, and it spelled a lot of trouble for the main suspects behind the attacks.

What followed after September 11th, 2001 was a declaration of a global war on terror announced by the then President George W. Bush. The war exacted a heavy toll from the U.S and then the countries against whom America acted. Those countries included Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Pakistan became a frontline state and assured full support in the war effort of the United States. The world is still engaged in the war that was declared back then and there have been successes as well as failures. Yet America stands firm in its resolve to root out terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Many suspects have been brought to book, and many have been eliminated. The chief person behind the attacks is also dead at the time this paper is being written. Still, the war against terrorism is far from over.

The Events

The organization behind the operation was al-Qaeda headed by Osama bin Laden's. Their stance was that they were acting against the U.S due to their support of Israel and their presence in Middle East. The terrorists had been in the U.S for quite some time. They had been students at various flying clubs across the country. Still, there were others who entered the country during the months before the attacks. They managed to dodge the security officials and carried knives and box cutters into the planes. After the planes had ...
