The Basics of Sexual Harassment

Introduction

Sexual harassment is an unlawful act that refers to harassing another person physically. This is considered to be an unwelcome sexual advancement/ harassment based on physical or oral approach or even the requesting of sexual favours. Harassment does not mean having sex with an individual, but giving offensive remarks about ones sex or body is also included in this charge. Harassing a woman is known to be illegal and it includes providing offensive comments about her (Judith et.al, 2011, p: 58). Both men and women can be victims of sexual harassment, or they might include victims of the same sex. Although the law does not allow such an activity, it has also prohibited simple teasing, isolated incidents, offhand comments, etc. In a working environment, offensiveness has resulted in adverse decisions from an employee. The harasser could be in any other area of office such as co-worker or might even be a customer or client (Deidre & Brian, 1998, p: 10). This is just not limited towards the same age limit, most of the time adults make attempts of harassment towards teenagers.

Sexual Harassment Types

Sexual harassment is more related to the social bullying and is also considered very similar (Judith et.al, 2011, p: 57). Both of these have been engaged in making unwanted sexual comments, physical contact and unwanted attention. Sexual harassment has generally two types, one is known as Quid pro Quo and the second one is to be called as Hostile environment. Sexual harassment of quid pro quo occurs when an upper level employee demands sex in exchange of a favour of promotion or making threats in case the other employee does not meet these demands. If an employee merely thinks that sex or any physical favours would be demanded of it, then it may constitute as a legal claim towards sexual harassment. The key part of sexual harassment is the advancement for unwanted physical or oral contact. This is becoming an increasing for a woman who wants to save her job and eventually becomes a victim of sexual harassment.

The 2nd type of sexual harassment, which is known as the hostile environment had been defined as when the working environment is made forbidding for someone due to its carnal nature or if the people working in that environment have made photos, jokes, extravagant comments or other perks.
