The research problem is basically the exploration of the economic benefits and drawbacks to the United Kingdom of being a member of European Union. Being a member of certain union brings both benefits and drawbacks to the countries simultaneously. The purpose of this research is to identify the economic aspects of being a member of European Union. United Kingdom being one of the most important European countries plays an integral role within the success of European Union. However, there are always certain benefits and drawbacks attached which countries witness being associated with the European Union. The underlying restrictions, rules and policies created by European Union sometimes create intense problems rather economic problems for the countries like United Kingdom (Watts & Pilkington, 2005 Pp. 100-110). All the possible benefits and drawbacks associated with being a member of European Union will be explored.

Moreover, this research tends to identify area of research which interests me the most. The topic chosen is in relation with the expected pathway of my career of political science. I believe political science remains one of the most important issues over which every single person must have enough grip to talk or debate about. The research problem seems extremely significant to me as I believe that United Kingdom must constantly review or do the cost benefit analysis of being a member of European Union because of the underlying economic restrictions made by the European Union (Watts & Pilkington, 2005 Pp. 100-110). For this reason, the exploration of the underlying benefits and drawbacks remains the basic purpose of this entire research. The research will make the reader aware about the different aspects for United Kingdom being attached to European Union.

Background Information

The underlying economic changes and continuous recessionary outcomes throughout the world have made countries to think about their alternate options to make their economies better. The policies of European Union are sometimes blamed to create extended problems economically for the countries which are the members of European Union. For instance, the underlying restrictions and policies related to the 'mergers and acquisitions' between companies makes it difficult for companies to survive and grow (Lexecon, 2009 Pp. 1359-1383).
