Abstract

The study will cover the reasons and level of depression among young girls in Malaysia. The focus of the research is on the Effect of Self-Esteem, Rumination, Body Dissatisfaction and Social Support in Predicting Depression among Sample of Early Adolescent Girls in Penang, Malaysia. The research will incorporate a thought review of literature relating to Malaysia to build on the foundations of the research. According to Drabble, 2000, depression is one of the most common problem observe in young girls, and now alarmingly in Adolescent girls in schools. Previous reports indicate girls and boys are equally likely to be depressed, but depression likelihood differentiates by gender during adolescence and into adulthood. The research will focus on different factors and elements that can contribute to the better understanding of the research. We will focus on the psycho- social influences of the girls, self-Esteem, emotional abuse, Rumination, and Children's Depression Inventory on depression related to Adolescent girls in Malaysia. According to Drabble, 2000, some researchers claim that labeling in the school system has some positive effects to label a child as gifted or special student. Indirectly, to appoint someone as gifted and produce an internal reward increases self-confidence which might have positive effects on the self-esteem of a student. Depression has always existed and is now regarded as a disease of significant impact and can be quite severe. Maria Kovacs studies have been critical to the professional knowledge of the condition. The study places special emphasis on the children's depression inventory structure which will be used extensively in the thesis. The DIKJ has 26 items; each item requires a choice between three possible answers. The answer alternatives characterize various attributes of a symptom state. A value of zero if no symptoms, a score of one describes a moderate expression of the symptom, with a value of three starts from a strong expression. The sequence of possible answers is divided equally between or arranged in descending order.
