"The Gilded Six-Bits"

Introduction

As human beings it's common for most of us to look at others; people who seem to have a better life, and wonder what it would be like to live the way they do or be like them. We assume money brings happiness because it allows you to get what you want. However, "everything that glitters isn't gold." In The Gilded Six Bits, Zora Neale Hurston uses different techniques to in order to analyze the Missy and Joe who are the main couple throughout the story.

Discussion

Hurston uses her personal experience in order to characterize the Missie May and Joe Bank as well as their marriage. She is also shows their character through the writing style and the techniques that show responses and reaction between Missie May and Joe in order to strengthen the development of relationship. She also support development of character through her style of writing and also experiences her own life to portray a real character as well as their personalities.

Characters

This story is the strength of the marriage between Joe Bank (a husband) Missie May (a wife), Otis D. Slemmons (a wealthy businessman) and the store clerk as the market.

Joe Bank

Joe Bank character is the story of Hurston as an adult black make who living with the black community in Florida State. This community is considered as one of Post Civil War racially homogenous town who are also known to be as race colonies. Joe started her adult life after having a job at fertilizer plant and marriage with Missie May with whom he loves a lot and lives comfortably. He has some remarkable reputation and has a strong proactive male figure that woman would prefer as a husband like him. Joe character is shown in the story as a good husband who loves Missie May a lot.

He is a poor man but hard working person and only works at the night shift while leaving her wife every night and it become unsafe as well as prone to danger. Second important this is that Joe has seems to believe that every single that that he or she takes is sees at face value. Beside from his weakness, he is considered as a good overall man and suffers terribly when he fined her wife slept with Otis Slemmons. When her wife becomes pregnant then he also waits until child is born to prove himself ...
