The Global Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Environment

Introduction

The mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are not integrated and they do not have any radio access to their networks. Still they are able to offer complete mobile services to their customers in the market. In these MVNOs either the hosting operator rents the radio access or the services of the radio access are completed using the transport network or switching network infrastructure. The mobile services that are technically operated by the host operators are resold by the MVNOs. Shortage of spectrum has limited the number of legally licensed mobile operators with compete infrastructure. The increase in the number of the customers made it clear that this limited number should be increased to cope with competitive market. However, National Regulatory Authorities (NRA) considers the emerging MVNO as a quick means to access mobile market. MNVO are surely there to increase the mobile market competition and help in increasing the economic welfare. Besides this, spectrum trading is also an option to be considered to increase the competition in the wireless domain. Yet the efficiency of the MVNO cannot be denied to crush the vertical integration of the MNOs. The MVNO stills stands rooted between the mobile network operators and the customers.

It is also a perception that the payback period of the vertical integration of MNO is efficient. This allows taking more financial and commercial risks. MNVOs also seek help from trusted third party for their service improvement. The growth in wireless technologies and the appearance of IMS and UMA will require fresh players to go active on the face of multiple, networks. The MVNOs will actually become flawless in their services on others ground assets. These MVNOs will finally become innovation driven. This situation is giving rise to oligopoly which in return demanding that every mobile operator be given fixed monetary profits and guaranteed income. Guaranteed income is based on the costs of the network and restricted number of players as well as revenues and assets. This trend can be disrupted using MVNO because of the simple reason that an MVNO does not own a any private network.
