The influence of child labor and sweatshops in undeveloped countries
Introduction
Throughout the history, men have exploited human resources in order to extract as much profit as they can. One of the most prominent issues of all time is the child labor that is said to be the reason behind the underdevelopment of children in undeveloped countries. The term is used to denote the employment of children in labor force in order to exploit their cheap skills. Sweatshops, according to the department of labor, are the ones that do not abide by the labor laws or do something that is against the labor laws. The paper will discuss the problem of child labor and sweatshops in the undeveloped countries and how it the producers exploit the working class. The paper will also discuss the economic effects of child labor and sweatshops on undeveloped countries.
Discussion
Sweatshops are believed to be draining the ones that work in there. It has been believed that sweatshops are the ones that not only exploit the labor but also make them work under severe conditions without giving them appropriate salaries. They sometime do not even compensate for the labor that they have done. The owners of sweatshops are blamed to be physically abusing the laborers. It is an exploitation cycle that they are trapped in. some of the proponents of the sweatshops are of the belief that even if they are exploiting the labor, they still are giving an opportunity to the unemployed ones to get a job. The opponents of the sweatshops argue that even if they get these so called jobs, they are not able to improve their economic situations only because of the less than par income and physical abuse that they experience.
Like sweatshops, Child labor is also criticized on different international forums because it is believed to be unethical as it deprives a child of the right to study. It traps the child so into an awful cycle of social isolation that the child is not able to interact with other social agents. Despite all the regulations that were developed in order to eliminate child labor, there has been no progress made in the domain. Even the most prominent companies in the world would exploit child because of cheap labor. These giant companies establish their plants in developing countries and employ children in their factories so that the labor acquisition could be cheap and the company gets as much profit as it can.
It has been believed that some of the world's most notable brands like Marks & Spencer, GAP, DKNY, Converse and banana republic have established sweatshops in undeveloped countries. According to the report that was published by the International Textile Garment and Leathers Workers' Federation (ITGLWF), these brands are involved in unethical practices in undeveloped countries. According to the report, many of the popular brands are breaking labor laws in other countries but they tend to follow them in the United States because they cannot break them in their own country.
