The Internet and the World Wide Web & the Future of the Semantic Web

Introduction

The presence of internet has transformed the lives of the individuals. WWW or World Wide Web has changed the communication methods between the societies and individuals. Internet can be called as revolution which currently shaping up the world towards the knowledge economy in wider terms the world is being transformed into knowledge society (Grobelnik et al, 2012) .

Conventionally computers were designed in order to execute complex numerical calculations. These days' computers have been diverted towards information processing database and text games. Currently computers are considered as doors to the information highway (Hepp, 2007).

Internet and WWW

The World Wide Web is the greatest source of information ever created by human beings. The data is extensively available on the web pages and is easily accessible by anyone. But the size of the internet had become a curse for it. It takes longer time to search for required information. The search is based on key words and key words are found in almost all of the non-relevant documents as well due to which search has become difficult (Mizoguchi et al, 2006).

Semantic Web

Semantic Web is the extension of current web which is better enabling the computers and individuals to work in cooperation. User locates the information on the internet with help of two main tools, search engines and catalogues. Catalogues are designed by humans who are accurate in terms of results but search engines were designed to elsewhere. Search engine use the mechanism which use the method of crawling the internet website and searches for changed pages and mechanism of indexing. The catalogues store the information on the basis of the usage of the words. The inability to comprehend the words and identify the relationship while searching for query is the drawback identified in search engines due to which semantic web is taking place (Majumda, 2007).

The content available online is suitable for the consumption of the individual. Today, web usage is for information searching regarding education, product comparisons, reviewing and ordering products. Software does not support these activities. Another medium which provides links between the knowledge and the individuals are the search engines. They have resulted in greater flow of people towards the internet. Search engines help individuals to obtain data without hassle by typing the key words. Most common search engines which are used widely are Yahoo and Google. Where search engines have made it easier for an individual to access the internet, at the same time those search engines have made difficult to access the most relevant information which is spread over variety of resources. Several searches are carried out in order to arrive at the most relevant engines. Search engines extract data from the World Wide Web with the help of key words and instances. Despite several improvements made by the search engines in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of search, problem remains the same (Bughin, 2011).
