The Jesus I never knew by Philip Yancey

Introduction

“The Jesus I Never Knew”, is an award winning book written by Philip Yancey. The main purpose of the book is to examine the life of the Jesus Christ. In this book, Philip has discussed not only the life but the death, resurrections and all the happenings of the Jesus Christ's living by quoting a wide range of theologians (Puffer & Mauren, 2007). Philip has quoted the examples from the America life by drawing upon many images, such as, how Palestinians would have perceived Jesus in his time (Yancey, 2002). He has believed that there are much learning and ministry's revolutionary aspects delivered by Jesus in the Bible which are now not practiced in the Churches or might have been overlooked. This gap has created a fuss between what Jesus might have thought and what actually happened in the lives of the people. This gap has lead to different problems in the life of common men (Yancey, 2013). Therefore, the main purpose of this book is that Yancey wants to recall and apply the teachings and the idea of Bible in the life of a common man (Puffer & Mauren, 2007). Yancey has struggled to identify the gap, analyze the teachings and to authentically implement those teachings in the life of common men in the modern world (Yancey, 2002).

This paper has summarized the findings of Yancey in the book, “The Jesus I never knew”, and then those findings are analyzed in relation to the life of the modern world (Yancey, n.d.). Secondly, the effectiveness and the implementation of those findings in the real life will also be discussed in this paper.

About the Book

The purpose of the book, “Jesus I never knew” by Philip Yancey is to identify the real teachings of Jesus in Bible and to identify the gap between what was actually thought by him and what is happening in the real life (Sramok, 2013). In this book, Philip has recognized the life of Jesus Christs, his perceptions, his way of leading the life, his teachings, miracles, work, death and renaissance. This book is mainly divided into three broad categories. Part one is, who he was; part two is, why he come; and, part three is, what he left behind (Puffer & Mauren, 2007). The teachings in this book are Yancey's own study on the life of Jesus, and it is one of his achievements that his teachings have leaded a group in Chicago to carry similar approach (Yancey, 2002).

Yancey has his own idea behind the research. He wanted to get the answer of his questions and to serve it as a guide for other people as well. As it is mentioned by Yancey himself, it does not matter if someone reads the book, “Jesus I never knew” by Philip, but what actually matters infinitely is for the person to get to know about ...
