The Odyssey

Introduction

Some questions have emerged after studying this piece of literature. The most prominent of them is how this poem inspired the Honda Company to name their car after it, which is known as Odyssey. Another question to consider is how the ideas in the poem affect the marketing strategies being implied in our century and how they affect our culture. All of this can narrow to the fact of how we perceive the concept of an odyssey (Louden, pp. 46).

Homer was blind but was one of the known greatest ancient Greek poets. He has the credit of writing Iliad and its sequel, The Odyssey. He beautifully crafted the poem that revolved around the Greek hero named Odysseus and his expedition back home after the collapse of Troy. Odysseus's journey expanded to ten years till he arrived at Ithaca. While he was away, it was misunderstood that he is no more alive and thus his wife Penelope and son Telemachus had to deal with boisterous people who were all trying to win Penelope for marriage (Homer, pp. 25).

Homer was blind and. His journey to return home was a long one, and it took him twenty years to travel from Troy. Life was not easy for him even when he came back; he had to face sea monsters, Cyclops, lotus-eaters and aggressive giants. When he gets out of all the problems, he realizes that he is trapped on an island of Aeaea by the Goddess Circe. He is able to overcome this problem only with the help of Zeus's son, Hermes, who is also the messenger of Gods.

While all this going in, his family is in misery back home. His son, however, believes that he is alive and thus embarks upon a mission to find him, with the help he has received from Goddess Athena (Louden, pp. 44). This poem is given eminent importance and is still read in the Homeric Greek, as well as translated into English and other languages around the globe. Some people assume that this poem was initially meant for only listening and not reading. Thus, its transition into a written work from an oral recital sparked debate among researchers. Now the word 'odyssey' takes the meaning of a voyage and that too, an epic one. This poem was followed by a sequel called the Telegony but it vanished because it was not written by Homer (Louden, pp. 45).

Analysis

It is important to analyze this poem from different aspects as the Greeks lose out on their mission when they are very near to their destiny. Aeolus is impressed with Odysseus gets royal treatment from Aeolous as he is impressed and inspired by Odysseus. He ties together all potentially damaging winds, and binds them firmly in an ox skin to stow the ox skin on Odysseus' ship.
