Introduction

The aim of this term paper is to provide information regarding the profession of nursing informatics. It would include the theoretical framework of Rogers Theory (Diffusion and innovation/change and innovation) as the underlying foundation of the topic. The theory of Everett Rogers aims to answer how, why, and at what rate fresh technology and ideas extend through culture (Muljadi, 2009). The paper would relate the theory of Rogers with the profession of nursing informatics. It would enable readers to understand how, why and at what rate the new ideas and technology impact the profession of nursing informatics. The industry of health and social care needs to cope up change by adopting new and innovative ideas, technologies and organizational process. Roger's theory can enable organizations to ensure effective change in many areas of the organization.

Discussion

The focus of the nursing informatics profession is towards identifying alternatives that can ensure improvements in communication and information management in nursing. It aims to reduce costs, improve efficiency and improve the service quality of patient care (Explore Health Care, 2013). The profession of nursing informatics plays an important role in the industry of health and social care. It can enable health care institutes to work more effectively and efficiently by providing better services to the patients and clients.

According to the American Nurses Association (2001), nursing informatics is a specialty that enables the integration of computer science, nursing science, and information science for managing and communicating information, data and knowledge in the practices of nursing. In order to support nurses, patients and other decision making authority in all settings and roles, nursing informatics smooth the progress of integrating data, knowledge and information. The effectiveness in the profession of nursing informatics is achieved by the use of information processes, information structures and information technology (Staggers and Thompson, 2002).

French sociologist Gabriel Trade was the first person to discuss the theory of “Diffusion of Innovation” in 1903. In 1943, the work of the theory was further carried by Gross and Ryan in 1943. The theory was further popularized and completed by Everett Rogers. The process that takes place as people adopt new philosophy, idea, product, practice and so on is referred as the Diffusion of Innovation Theory. The theory plays an important role in serving information technologists, administrators, nursing informatics experts. Roger's theory fits well with the profession of nursing informatics and enables a scaffold for bringing innovation in the planning of informatics (Kaminski, 2011).

The importance of Roger's theory can be seen in the field of nursing informatics as it enable the managers and decision making authorities of hospitals and health care institute in adopting change. It is extremely important for industries around the globe to look for new and innovative ways of serving customers, clients and patients.
