CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The working environment of any organization results in employee motivation and retention. If the organization maintains its business operations ethically then the employees get more motivated and the turnover rate of the employees is decreased. Carmeli & Josman (2006) the employees' actions and or practice reflect the culture of the organization. In order to keep the employees motivated and retained, organizations must make them realised that their work and presence in the organisation is worthy. This study will investigate the role of business ethics in keeping the staff motivated and retained the talented staffs.

Purpose statement

The purpose of the mixed study is to find out the role of business ethics in motivating and retaining employees of Starbucks UK. In this study, the relationship between ethical working environment, business practices and community involvement (independent variables) with employees' motivation and retention of Starbucks (dependent variables) will be examined in the mixed method. In order to comprehend this concept clearly, the researcher will conduct survey from employees and interviews with top management of Starbucks.

Research variables

Following will be the research variables for this study:

Independent variables:

Ethical working environment, business practices, and community involvement.

Dependent variables:

Employees' motivation and employees' retention.

Research questions and hypothesis

A strong ethical work environment may produce employee motivation and employee retention. In order to assess the relationships between ethical work environment and employee motivation and retention following research questions will be assessed and discussed:

Research question (Q1): How ethical working environment affects employees' productivity?

H10: Ethical working environment does not affect employees' productivity at Starbucks UK

H1A: Ethical working environment affects employees' productivity at Starbucks UK

Research question (Q2): What are the impacts of ethical working environment, business practices and community involvement on Starbucks employees?

H10: Ethical working environment, business practices and community involvement do not have any impact on employees' motivation and retention at Starbucks UK.

H1A: Ethical working environment, business practices and community involvement do have an impact on employees' motivation and retention at Starbucks UK.

Research question (Q3): What is the role of business ethics on employees' motivation at Star buck UK?

H10: There is a negative relationship between business ethics and employee motivation at Starbucks.
