The Trinity

Introduction

Masaccio created the Trinity between 1425 and 1427, the exact time is unknown. Although there are many proves that Masaccio created it, but some doubts still remain. The artist dies at the young age of 26 in 1428 right after he had painted this masterpiece. His death left behind little work of his which was unfinished. Trinity turned out to be not only the last but also the best piece of art ever.

The basilica's left aisle holds this fresco at the middle of all other paintings. Over the years, this room has changed in terms of its configuration and space but it is quite clear that previously, this artifice was aligned to enhance the tromp l'oeil effect. It was first placed in such a way that the entrance way was just in line with this painting. Previously, there was also an altar table which was placed over a shelf in between the upper and the lower sections of this painting. This further emphasized how real this master piece actually was.

History

When Vasari's alter was demolished in 1860 for the purpose of renovations this fresco was discovered. The upper part of the entire painting, the crucifixion was transferred to canvas and then the location of this part of the painting was changed. The lower part of the painting contained the cadaver tomb; at the time of renovations in the 1860s this part was omitted. Whether this was done purposely or because of the construction work is still not known.
