The urban religious experience of Hindus and African Americans in New York

Introduction

In comparing religious experience between African Americans and Hindus in New York, it is clear that both these specific groups hold different difference of opinion in their religious matter and theology. There are a number of Hindu temples in New York as the Hindu population is the largest in the city in comparing with other state of the country. Likewise the number of catholic churches in New York is abundant and a number of African Americans visit these churches on Sundays. New York City is characterized by fast pace of life and it is indeed tough to make time for prayers and performance of religious practices. However, is new consider the local distribution of the entire population of New York, it can be observed that both these groups have their own territories and communities (Carnes, pp. 145-146). If we consider the masses both, African Americans and Hindus live in their dignified localities where they practice their religious affairs at ease. There is also some differences of opinions between the two groups in relation to their mental approach towards life, for example, African Americans seek religious refuge for their mental health problems rather going to a psychiatrist. On the other hand Hindus are also superstitious and establish their beliefs in after life and sequential births.

Discussion

The consideration of African American religious expressions is limited to the considerations which are based on the Black Churches. The spiritual churches also began to emerge during the period of expansion and diversification. The African American Religions experience in New York is limited to the black churches and to the Islamic thoughts and practices.
