There are those who argue for the meeting of the two in ways that benefit both. There, on the other hand, those who think that the concerns of the two are not compatible. Relationship between the two disciplines is discussed from the standpoint of theology to provide the legal basis for the study of religions. D. Allen is of the view that the history of religions must be "aided by and dependent on a normative discipline, such as theology. J. Kittagawa, a colleague of Eliade, admits that the theological history of religions is legitimate and permissible , but we must distinguish the "humanist" History of Religions, which develop an adequate knowledge of classical forms of religious phenomena. To Kittagawa, Religionswissenschaft and theology can interact, but remain independent. EJLott, one of my mentors, emphasizes that Christian theology must depend on Religious Studies. It suggests, "For theology can not function reflexively and contextually in an isolated state of independence of other devout traditions and ignorant of the conclusion of devout studies.
