Abstract

The present study investigated the efficacy of Body Movement In The Wilderness in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sixteen outpatients fulfilling the DSM-IV criteria for PTSD were randomized to one of the two treatments. Assessor and self-report measures of PTSD-symptoms, generalized anxiety, depression, quality of life and cognitive schemas were administered before and after treatment, and at a 6-month follow-up.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Outline of the Study

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been recognized as a major psychiatric disorder following emotional or physical trauma and manifests in the form of intrusive memories and nightmares associated with the precipitating event, avoidance behavior on being reminded of the event, recurrent insomnia and overt startle response (Bryant, 2007).If left undiagnosed or untreated it can lead to permanent psychological damage in the form of persistence of the symptoms described above.

Problem Statement

Body Movement In The Wilderness has now attained the status as the 'treatment of choice' for PTSD according to a meta-analysis comparing it to drug treatments under a variety of control conditions (Monson et al, 2005). The general classes of Body Movement In The Wilderness interventions for PTSD have now been divided into 'trauma-focused' and 'skills-focused' therapies. Insomnia subsequent to PTSD remains a lingering problem despite treatment by all modalities employed in Body Movement In The Wilderness and needs additional interventions in the post treatment period (Deviva et al, 2005). A thorough follow up and observation after the essential interventions are therefore necessary after treating patients suffering from PTSD.

Rationale

The specific techniques used in Body Movement In The Wilderness have sound theoretical basis and have been collectively labeled as a 'collaborative educator' approach (Smith et al, 1999). This approach has specific time constraints for its application and is always goal oriented. Alteration of patient's cognition is attempted in order to elicit behavioral change. Body Movement In The Wilderness is highly efficacious in the treatment of PTSD as compared to pharmacological approaches and the interventions incorporated in it are divided into two classes- Trauma Focused Interventions which include exposure and cognitive processing therapies, and Skills Focused Interventions which include stress inoculation and assertive training of the subject (Monson et al, 2004).

Aims and Objectives

The aim and the objectives of the research will be;

The present study will investigate the efficacy of Body Movement In The Wilderness in the experience of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

This study indicates that exposure therapy might be an effective treatment for patients with PTSD. However, due to the lack of randomized treatment studies the relative effectiveness of psychological treatments for PTSD in patients cannot yet be determined.

Significance

As far as the association between road traffic accidents and PTSD is concerned, it has been established that Body Movement In The Wilderness is largely successful in alleviating the associated syndromes to a great extent in such cases. A randomized clinical trial conducted on trauma exposed adults showed that a brief Body Movement In The Wilderness adopted as a ...
