Introduction

In sociological studies, race and ethnicity account for important concepts that want to be studied by the researchers and sociologist in great depth. Even race plays a vital role in everyday human interactions. With respect to the sociology, race and ethnicity have differences in their definitions. Race is defined as the social group which is distinct from other groups of the society on the basis of biological and other cultural characteristics. These characteristics show the unfair treatment by the powerful groups of the society. The most common example of this statement is the assigning of racial categories by the people like black and white people. However, studies show that the science and the other facts studies are not responsible for such behaviors. Because the attitude of people is already socially constructed as it is a social process. On the other hand, ethnic groups are social category of people who are sharing common culture like language, religion, customs and other historical practices.

Not only the sociologists are interested in race and ethnicity but different literature writers explore these concepts in their marvelous writings. An expansion of this is the black women and problems facing by them in the name of race and ethnicity.

Discussion

Role of Race and Ethnicity in Literature

Both African and American literature defines the concept of race and ethnicity in a possible potential ways. The African and American literature openly addresses race matters, and then informs readers so that they think and analyze the core thought of the literature (Seaman, 2006).

For analyzing the literature on race and ethnic groups, two heading are selected. After critically analyzing the subjects the core conclusion with recommendations has been presented in the later text. The selections are: “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer and “What It's like to be a Black Girl” by Patricia Smith.

“Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer

Nadine Gordimer is a South African writer and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. Her writings are recognized as very beneficial for the humanity. One of the master pieces is “Country Lovers” which is a story of prohibited love between a black girl named Thebedi and Paulus, the son of her white masters. The love story was started when they were in their childhood and with the passage of time, this easy going likeness and flirt became a harmful sexual desire for both the lovers.

The black girl was pregnant and left the college without informing Paulus about this and she also did not inform him that her parents were arranging her for marriage. After the two months of her marriage she delivered a baby girl with lighter complexion as compared to her dark parents Thebedi and Njabulo. Paulus returned from the collage vacations and came to know through his mother that Thebedi had a baby girl. He went to her house and showed his anger on her.
