Some historians have suggested that Timur can best be understood as an imitator of Genghis Khan. Though similar in many ways, Timur cannot best be understood as an imitator of Genghis Khan. I personally do not consider Timur as an imitator of Genghis Khan. The Mongols, nomadic people who inhabited the arid steppes of Central Asia, held in different tribes living that fought each other. Theirs was a land desolate, windswept, where life was not easy. The lack of pasture and food, the Mongols did crave the riches of Persian and Chinese neighbors. The history of the Mongolian people has changed with the emergence of a tribal chief called Timur, a character who made history as Genghis Khan. In the late twelfth century, Timur managed to gather all the tribes of Mongolia under one cause: to put the world at his feet.
With regards to history, in order to be successful, mistakes of the past must be avoided. This accounts for better political laws, a rising economy, and stronger military forces of his time. If Timur had been an imitator of Genghis Khan, he would have secured the areas of Genghis Khan's weaknesses and enhanced the areas of his greatness. The most obvious error in Timur's reign was his failure to set up a successful succession.
Military strategies of Timur and Genghis
Timur was a politician and as a strategist he was able to earn and maintain the loyalty of his follower nomads, operate in a fluid political structure, modify it, and drive a huge army to unparalleled achievements. And while these skills may arise from the subtleties of political power struggles that precede tribal most nomadic conquests, he was also singularly unfit to rule over the Arab and Persian lands that he had conquered. Although, the punished recalcitrant cities and imposed ruinous ransom to the cities to be submitted without a struggle, he showed a clear understanding of the value of trade and agriculture and took steps to promote it by using his troops to restore areas and cities that were razed. He was also skillful in manipulating cultural symbols set and using them in public buildings to show his greatness, and religion to justify their conquests and their government.
