Introduction

Transactions are the everyday activities that are performed by various business organizations. In these transactions, some are commercial which includes the paying bills, selling services and products, and buying etc. other kind of transitions comprise of the retrieving or recording of the data, for example, looking up of results, the enrollment of a student at the university, and making a booking etc.

Most of the transactions that are individual are comparatively uncomplicated; however, in various organizations and business associations, there a huge amount of them, as a result the efficiency and speed are significantly considered. A computing style that splits the work into the indivisible operations i.e. transactions, and individuals is the transaction processing (Bernstein, & Newcomer, 2009). A transaction server or more commonly known as transaction processing system is a combination of hardware and software, which supports this process.

History

The first transaction processing system was of SABRE system of the American Airline. This system was operated in the year 1960 and was designed in a way so that it can process almost 82,000 to 83,000 transactions per day. This TPS was operated on two computers of IBM 7090 model. In the year 1972, SABRE was switched on the IBM System/360 computers and was known as the Airline control Program (ACP). In the later years this system was called as the Transaction Processing Facility and was the first IBM product. The TPF was also used by hotel chains, credit card companies and by banks.

Tandem Non Stop system, originally named as Hewlett-Packard Non Stop system, was a software and hardware system. This system was introduced in the year 1976, and was designed for the Online Transaction Processing (OLTP). The main purpose of this system's designing was to provide transaction processing and the system offered a tremendous level of data integrity and availability (Bernstein, & Newcomer, 2009).

A Transaction Processing System (TPS) is a formed accumulation of individuals, methods, databases, fittings and programming to record finished business transactions.
