How Turkish Immigrants build their own Identity in the EU: Interculturalism vs. Multiculturalism

Background of the Research

There have been numerous debates regarding the Interculturalism concept in the last decade. Various defenders of the Interculturalism, in contrast to the multiculturalism, highlight the importance and advantages of the Interculturalism. They have continually highlighted the positive qualities of Interculturalism terms of advocating unity, recognizing dynamic identities, encouraging communication and liberal, cultural practices. In this respect, the aim of my dissertation is going to be exploring the way in which Turkish immigrants build their own identities by analyzing the multiculturalist European countries by contrasting the concepts of Interculturalism. EU is the one of the best palaces for immigrants for a long time, and Turkish immigrants are quite a large population in the EU. That would make them an appropriate research ground for the purpose of this research.

Interculturalism

Interculturalism is subjected to variables such as diversity, cultural hegemony, politics and economics of countries and regions, definition of culture, communication barriers such as language, inclusive and integrationist policies of states, social hierarchies, and economic systems and underpins exclusionary ideological hegemony by discrimination (Rattansi, 2009, pp. 66-89). It also focuses over different levels of ignorance among cultural groups of social and political mechanisms for the exercise of civil rights, as differences in the exercise of human rights and gender.

Interculturalism is the philosophy of exchanges between cultural groups in a society. The notion of Interculturalism comes as the preferred means of awareness of cultural diversity. It involves the active participation of the society host towards the integration of newcomers along with a mutual knowledge and understanding of cultural differences (Rattansi, 2009, pp. 66-89). More precisely, Interculturalism suggests the adoption of the dominant culture of the country or the region associated with the adoption of common research while protecting individual differences.

Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism ideology is egalitarian that promotes coexistence of different cultures and people (ethnic, racial or religious) in the same social group, one country, one state. Multiculturalism aims to unify all cultures, races and religions under the utopian slogans that all are equal, and they are able to live in harmony within a state. This doctrine is an essential part of the process of globalization whose result is a unified international government or world government (Rattansi, 2009, pp. 66-89). The concept of multiculturalism is to describe the interaction between two or more cultures in a horizontal manner and synergistic.

This means that neither set is above another, a condition that favors integration and peaceful coexistence of all individuals. It should be noted that intercultural relations presupposes respect for diversity, although it is inevitable that conflicts develop, but they are resolved through respect, dialogue and consultation (Pena's & Carmen, ...
