What are the similarities and differences between management and leadership?

There are several similarities between the management and leadership. The management requires the task of managing people and work with the help of a plan and a strategy. The goal is to prepare people in meeting the goals and targets of the organization. Leadership is a skill that cannot be practiced by everyone. It is a natural trait and does not need any training. Leadership covers the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement (Amagoh, 2009, 999). The similarities and differences of the Management and Leadership are mentioned in the following paragraphs:

Similarities

Both of them have a common goal to achieve the organization's objectives.

They share a need to give the direction to the employees.

Differences

Management requires training but leadership is a natural skill.

The influence of leader is very high on the people as compare to the managers.

Can two or more people work together effectively and successfully without a leader?

In this case, it is dependent on the situation faced by the workers. In some cases, the managers can handle the staff properly. However, the influence and the direction of the leader matters considerably for the organization. The role of leaders becomes crucial under such situations. Therefore, it is suitable for the organizations to have leaders.

Define management

The definition of management simply refers to the specific process related to the planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling people's efforts. This refers to those people who have engagement in the business activities in order to achieve the desired objective.

Taylor

Frederick W Taylor was a famous theorist who developed vital concepts related to the Management. He devised a system known as Scientific Management which is a form of Industrial Engineering which helped in establishing the organization of work similar to the Ford's assembly line. He developed management theories which evolved over the period of time and had the elements of Quality Control Management as well (Kirkpatick & Locke, 1991, 60).

Fayol

Henry Fayol was a famous HR researcher who introduced concepts related to the Management. According to Fayol, the definition of management refers to the activities related to forecast, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and control. All these activities had a lot of value in the Management process.

Max Weber

Max Weber is known as a principal architect of modern social science. The wide ranging contributions made by theorist Weber gave critical momentum to the birth of new academic disciplines which comprises of sociology and public administration. This also covered aspect relate to significant reorientation in law, economics, political science and religious studies (Stogdill, 1948, 71).
