Introduction

Jon Krakauer, the author of the very famous, dramatic book Into the Wild, presents us a most paradoxical young character, Christopher McCandless. His story of life and death has affected a surprising number of people. Those who knew him, say he was intelligent, courageous, nice, but … always a hungry guy. Those who read about him, agonizingly try to figure out what ruled this intense young man, who right after graduating gave twenty-four-thousand dollars to charity, left his family, and most of the civilized life. He started to wander around the country, looking for something elusive, perhaps happiness, as we all, and finally met his end inside an old, rusty bus in Alaska. Living close to nature and surviving on only rice and yield he could get from the land, McCandless wanted to find some truth in life or try himself - we do not know. However, what makes him so affecting and close to almost everybody's soul is that we all try to find something elusive in our life and try to understand how all irregularities can take place in our world.

Discussion

Notwithstanding the fact that McCandless was such a nice, promising guy, it is also obvious that he had a gap in his thinking. In other words, he had a lack of common sense. McCandless hardly showed any intelligence in his rejection of money or his poor preparedness to the trips; his solicitude about homeless and his way to try his manliness were halved, and his relationships with people were rather strange (Krakauer, 1997).

McCandless was almost genius rather than just smart. He became a follower of Leo Tolstoy's ideas when he was only twenty years old. Being so young, McCandless already rejected a life of wealth and privileges, and was extremely concerned with life of homeless, hungry, and abandoned people. "McCandless took life's inequities to heart," discovered author (Krakauer, p. 113). In high school, he spend his weekends "chatting with prostitutes and homeless people, buying them meals, earnestly suggesting ways they might improve their lives" (Krakauer, p. 113). In his early life, McCandless was successful. He was proposed into the class for gifted children, he easily got As, and his GPA score was almost the perfect average 3.72. When he was twelve, he started his small copy business for neighbors. In the high school, the local building contractor hired him and was so successful that they deposited $7000 into his account; still in high school, he worked for his parents' company and wrote a computer program. His father said, "The program he wrote ... was flawless. We still use it today and have sold copies of the program to many clients" (Krakauer, p.120) (Krakauer, 1997).

After graduation in college McCandless did not fear to be blamed by his family for the impulsive action and gave twenty-four-thousand dollars to charity. Then he courageously followed his dream “to spend the summer alone in the bush, living off the land,” which he would have from childhood (Krakauer, p. 159). He tried ...
