Explain the main forms of visual art expression of one chosen time in history and how the art contributed to society culturally and historically.

Impressionism originated in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, 1867 - 1986 AD. In this period, French artists started outdoor painting and scenes of realistic painted work of modern life which got its name as “Impressionism”. In the beginning, the Impressionists were not well known so they arranged independent exhibitions, but came to prominence during the 1870s (Welton, 1993). The impressionists used thin brush strokes to create an impression of intense tone of color vibration, and focused on accurate representation of light. They did painting on ordinary subjects in an extraordinary manner. They also included unusual visual angles in their artistic painting representing various scenarios. The newer concept in this type painting was that they started doing painting in sunlight considering that they could capture effects of sunlight in their artistic work thus making it more effective and creative. Before impressionism, painting was done in indoor environment.

The astonishing work of the impressionist made public believed that they have gathered an original vision. Frédéric Bazille, Gustave Caillebotte and Mary Cassatt were among the prominent painters of impressionist era. Bazille was French by origin that focused on figure painting and worked on landscape art along with the subject figure. His paintings were unique because they used to represent concepts in a different way from the rest. Caillebotte was also French who was a patron of impressionists. He selected a much more realistic approach in comparison to his counterparts. He is renowned for doing photography in an artistic form because they appeared to be so much realistic. Cassatt was American by origin but spent much of her life in France. Her paintings used to surround around women. She prepared paintings relating to social and private lives of women with prominent focus on intimate relation between mothers and her children.
