We're in the Money

Introduction

The book 'We're in the Money' by Andrew Bergman, is a literary classic, as it critically analyses the American society during its worst economic recession. I found the story of the book to be very captivating and interesting, as it presented a new point of view, regarding the American society in the Great Depression. I thought that the way the book was organized, and the succession of the chapters was very influential in the description of the American society given by the author. The hallmark of any interesting book is that reading each chapter enables the reader to form a greater interest in the overall story, and become eager to read the next chapter. The content of the book was itself very interesting as it enables the readers to learn about the role of cinema and Hollywood to bring people out of their economic troubles (Hark, pp. 46).

The Great financial depression had led the American society to become very apprehensive and cynical regarding the job prospects or the quality of life. In this scenario it is very hard to believe that the movie going culture in the country was at its developmental stage. An analysis of the movie attendance figures during the period of 1930s, would not adequately suggest that the country was facing its biggest crises in its history. The cinema provided people happiness and welcome distraction from the various hardships experienced in their daily lives. It was a chance for people to forget about their current situations, and escape in to the comical and the dream filled world of the movies. It is not very hard to believe that the movies and the glamorous life presented in the Hollywood can help people forget about the hardships of their real lives, but the book actually analyzes the theme of the movies, and how the social perception of the public was changing (Bergman, pp. 104). I think the chapters of the book present allow the reader to get accustomed to the various genres of movies that were becoming popular in that era, and more importantly why these genres were being so widely accepted by the people. This is the reason why I believe that the book by Bergman, is very captivating, as the content is organized in a conclusive manner, which helps the readers to from a comprehensive picture regarding the society ...
