Why should or shoudn't recycling be mandatory?

Introduction:

Recycling refers to the process of recovering and reprocessing of waste material to utilize it in new products. It has been proven one of the best ways to reuse the waste materials. Recycling has many beneficial aspects associated with it. Recycling helps save energy, natural resources, landfill space, and it also create job opportunities. At the same time, beside all these benefits, this practice has not been adopted on large scale. The major problem associated with the entire issue is not that people choose to waste all renewable material, but people are not educated enough to know what are the benefits of recycling. Recycling actually helps in reduction of the amount of solid waste deposited in landfills. Whereas; air, water and land pollution occurring through waste disposal can also be reduced through recycling. On the other hand, many are of the view that recycling cost more than creating original products and due to such high cost involvement, many countries are still hesitant in its adoption.

Another approach suggests that recycling basically depends upon economic factors. Affluence condition and availability of cheap raw materials encourage the tendency of human being to simply discard used materials. The process seems attractive where the cost of recycling process is proven cheaper, compare to the processing of new raw material and treating and disposing of used material.

Types of recycling

Recycling has been broken down in two different types as per the process and importance it involves. Internal is the first type of recycling which involves reuse of the waste products in manufacturing process which are the waste product of that process. The manufacture of copper tubing results in a certain amount of waste in the form of tube ends and trimmings; this material is re-melted and recast.

Second process is called external process, which entails reclaiming of materials that are damaged or outdated. For instance newspaper and magazines have been collected for re-pulping and then manufactured into new paper products.

It is necessary to discuss the types of recycling process, as companies who recycle the waste products of their manufacturing process might save some cost, which falls in internal recycling but on the other hand external recycling cost more, and needed to be done on large scale. In this regard it would be easy to find out, why should or shouldn't recycling be mandatory?
