ABSTRACT

This dissertation explores the topic of wireless networks. It explains the idea of wireless networks, its infrastructure and its basic principles. Moreover, the study also explains different challenges faced by wireless networks. The research then defines different generations of Wireless networks. Furthermore, the research identifies various security issues related to the wireless communication and what steps have been taken by IEEE standards in order to overcome these drawbacks and security issues. Last chapter explains the economic importance of wireless industry, its increasing popularity, changing trends of the market and the future perspective.

CHAPTER 1: WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND PRINCIPLES

Wireless Networks as an Innovation

Innovation, communication channels, time, and social systems are very important factors through the diffusion process. The last portion of the 20th century is typically characterized by many advances in information technology (Derba & Siegel, 2003, 1). In fact, many refer to this time period as the information age while others posit that this time period can just as appropriately be termed the “innovation age”. An innovation can be thought of as “an idea, practice, or object perceived as new by an individual” (Peterson & William, 2004, 1). Additionally, “It matters little, so far as human behaviour is concerned, whether or not an idea is 'objectively' new as measured by the lapse of time since its first use or discovery” (Prasad & Mukherjee, 2007, 16). “The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from” noted famous computer scientist and mathematician Grace Murray Hopper. The advent of wireless network technologies in general and in particular the development of IEEE 802.11 standards is very innovative in that they allow the deployment of wireless networks (Ioannis, Dimitriou & Freiling, 2007, ...
